FAQs

Is Oolong tea considered a green tea or a black tea?

It is actually neither! Oolong falls into its own unique category. All tea comes from the same plant (Camellia sinensis), but the difference lies in "oxidation"—the reaction of tea leaves to oxygen.

  • Green Tea is 0% oxidized (fresh and grassy).
  • Black Tea is 100% oxidized (bold and malty).
  • Oolong Tea is semi-oxidized, usually landing anywhere between 10% and 80%. This gives it the complexity of black tea with the fresh, aromatic finish of green tea.

What does Oolong tea taste like?

Because Oolong sits in the middle of the tea spectrum, it has one of the widest ranges of flavors. A lighter Oolong can be floral, buttery, and fresh (similar to a green tea), while a darker, more roasted Oolong can be toasty, woody, and rich with notes of stone fruit or honey.

Our Organic Oolong is selected to be smooth and aromatic without the bitterness often found in over-steeped teas.

How much caffeine is in Oolong tea?

Oolong contains a moderate amount of caffeine—generally falling right in the middle between green tea and black tea. A typical cup contains about 35–50mg of caffeine (compared to 95mg in coffee).

It is an excellent choice for a gentle energy boost that enhances focus without the "jitters" or crash often associated with coffee or energy drinks.

Is Oolong tea good for wellness and metabolism?

Yes, Oolong is widely revered in wellness circles. It is rich in unique antioxidants called polyphenols.

Many studies suggest that the combination of caffeine and these polyphenols may help support a healthy metabolism and assist the body in burning fat more efficiently. It is a popular companion for those maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle.

How do I brew the perfect cup of Oolong?

The secret to Oolong is temperature. Avoid using boiling water (212°F), which can scorch the leaves and make the tea bitter.

  1. Heat water to roughly 185°F – 195°F (just before a rolling boil).
  2. Steep your tea bag or leaves for 3 to 5 minutes.
  3. Taste at the 3-minute mark; if you prefer a bolder flavor, steep longer.
Tip: High-quality Oolong tea leaves can often be steeped multiple times, releasing different flavor notes with each brew.

Can I add honey, milk or sugar?

Traditionally, Oolong is enjoyed plain to savor its complex natural sweetness and floral aroma.

However, taste is personal! If you are drinking a darker, roasted Oolong, a splash of milk or a touch of honey can be delicious. For lighter, greener Oolongs, we recommend trying it plain first to experience the delicate notes.

Honey is recommended if you prefer lightly sweet.
